All 3 of the class in mothballs at Philly, when? DES MOINES sure looked HUGE when I got to tour her in Hoboken, NJ circa Nov., '56. Those 8" rifles looked HUGE! :) DFO

Des Moines Class Heavy Cruiser USS Newport News pictured at Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company fitting out berth on January 1st 1949, she would be commissioned on January 29th.

Former Lead Ship, Heavy Cruiser Des Moines pictured under tow in October 2006 by Salvage Ship USS Grasp from Philadelphia Naval Shipyard to ESCO scrapyard (Brownsville, Texas), after 45 years in mothballs.

The DES MOINES sure looked like a very BIG, powerful warship when I toured her in Hoboken, NJ circa late 1957, IIRC....... :D I do remember it was COLD and blustery.....no blue sky! DFO
