After action report – Royal Navy’s busiest air defence activity since 1982

On the 9th of January 2024, HMS Diamond was involved in a significant action with US forces defending merchant vessels in the Red Sea from a mass air attack launched from Yemen. Here we analyse the information available about this event.
Complex attack - Continues at https://www.navylookout.com/after-actio ... ince-1982/

U.S. Central Command

On Jan. 11 at 2:30 a.m. (Sanaa time), U.S. Central Command forces, in coordination with the United Kingdom, and support from Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, and Bahrain conducted joint strikes on Houthi targets to degrade their capability to continue their illegal and reckless attacks on U.S. and international vessels and commercial shipping in the Red Sea. This multinational action targeted radar systems, air defense systems, and storage and launch sites for one way attack unmanned aerial systems, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles.

Since Oct. 17, 2023, Iranian-backed Houthi militants have attempted to attack and harass 27 ships in international shipping lanes. These illegal incidents include attacks that have employed anti-ship ballistic missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles and cruise missiles in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. These strikes have no association with and are separate from Operation Prosperity Guardian, a defensive coalition of over 20 countries operating in the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandeb Strait, and Gulf of Aden.

“We hold the Houthi militants and their destabilizing Iranian sponsors responsible for the illegal, indiscriminate, and reckless attacks on international shipping that have impacted 55 nations so far, including endangering the lives of hundreds of mariners, including the United States,” said General Michael Erik Kurilla, USCENTCOM Commander. “Their illegal and dangerous actions will not be tolerated, and they will be held accountable.”

IRIS ALBORZ
IRIS BUSHEHR
MV BEHSHAD
These 3 ships are likely returning to Iran.
IRIS ALBORZ and IRIS BUSHEHR have been deployed in the Red Sea for approximately 63 days, Then add the time that it took for them to sail from Iran to the Red Sea that would be an additional 8-12 days or so, then add additional 8-12 days or so to return back to Iran That would place them at about 80 to 85 day deployment. IRIN tends to operate with 60 to 90 day deployments IRIS ALBORZ and IRIS BUSHEHR arrived in Red Sea approximately Friday November 10th 2023. As I pointed out in my daily map update on 06JAN2024 IRIS ALBORZ and IRIS BUSHEHR their deployment should end between 09JAN2023 and 08FEB2024 and be replaced with a different Frigate and Auxiliary Ship. MV BEHSHAD has sat in the red sea since 2021 and with escalation they are likely sailing with IRIS ALBORZ and IRIS BUSHEHR back to Iran.

MV BEHSHAD was spotted 11JAN2023 in the Gulf of Aden.

U.S. Central Command

At 3:45 a.m. (Sana’a time) on Jan 13., U.S. forces conducted a strike against a Houthi radar site in Yemen. This strike was conducted by the USS Carney (DDG 64) using Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles and was a follow-on action on a specific military target associated with strikes taken on Jan. 12 designed to degrade the Houthi’s ability to attack maritime vessels, including commercial vessels.

Since Nov. 19, 2023, Iranian-backed Houthi militants have attempted to attack and harass vessels in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden 28 times. These illegal incidents include attacks that have employed anti-ship ballistic missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles, and cruise missiles.

These strikes have no association with and are separate from Operation Prosperity Guardian, a defensive coalition of over 20 countries operating in the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandeb Strait, and Gulf of Aden.

WO1 Jim Wright

Having a coffee at home and just reflecting how lucky I am to be home.
The units deployed don’t have the same luxury.
Especially those fighting against the Houthi Rebels.
Barely have time to scratch their arses!
Thank you for what you do.
