AUKUS 'CATCHUP'

For starters a sensible article from the Guardian explaining the challenges but accepting the strategic need for Australia to acquire SSNs - https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfr ... dermine-it

The £3bn extra for defence nuclear enterprise over next 2yrs primarily for Infrastructure to support RN submarines & AUKUS

Lost amongst the excitement about the Australian boats yesterday was the fact that the SSN(R) programme appears to have been accelerated with the RN supposedly getting the first of class in the late 2030s.

This would avoid the need for expensive LIFEX for the early Astutes.

Australia to join Royal Navy SSN(R) submarine programme

Analysis of the implications and what SSN(R) might look like ~ https://www.navylookout.com/australia-t ... programme/

Defence Minister Alex Chalk Chelt confirmed yesterday:
The first AUS boat will be built at BAES Maritime in Barrow.
Rolls Royce UK will build all the nuclear reactors for the AUS submarines.
AUS will make a proportionate investment in UK infrastructure.

Possible the Ministers statement could be misinterpreted.
"I am looking forward to going to Barrow with the Premier of South Australia, where the first SSN-AUKUS for the Royal Australian Navy will be built."
Does he mean Barrow or South Australia?

Hansard have corrected the transcript of Defence Minister's Alex Chalk Chelt AUKUS Parliamentary statement to clear up confusion.
The first Australian SSN-AUKUS will be built in South Australia (not in Barrow)
(Note: all nuclear reactors will be built / assembled in the UK

First new Australian nuclear sub not being built in Britain, but in South Australia

In a huge boost to UK industry, the first AUKUS-class nuclear-powered submarine for the Royal Australian Navy will be built in Britain.
UPDATE/CORRECTION 16/03/2023 – This article has been corrected. We had claimed, based on a transcript from Hansard, that the first new submarine for Australia would be built in the United Kingdom. The Ministry of Defence has since clarified that the original transcript created by Hansard was inaccurate and has since been amended to better reflect the original words of the minister quoted. More information on this correction is detailed in the following tweet.

What is it to be a submariner – and what does it mean to the spiritual home of the Silent Service?

Those are questions answered in an impressive online repository of interviews, photographs and memories of submariners – and their families – to bring the Service past and present to life… and shed light on its impact on Gosport.

France Joins AUKUS Submarine Program

Under extended plans, France will join the AUKUS submarine program. This will see advanced nuclear-powered attack submarines built for Australia, United Kingdom and France. The United States is also providing key elements, including interim submarines for the Royal Australian Navy.
