HMS Trincomalee - Hartlepool

Unread post by jbryce1437 »

HMS Trincomalee is part of the National Museum of the Royal Navy and is located at Hartlepool, Teesside. She is a Leda Class sailing frigate and was built at Bombay, India and launched in 1817. She was placed in reserve until 1845 when her armament was reduced and she was reclassified as a corvette. She then served in North America and the West Indies station until 1850 and then spent two years on the Pacific Station.
She finished her service as a training ship and was then placed in reserve and sold two years later in 1897.
She was then renamed TS Foudroyant and she was then used as an accommodation ship, a training ship, and a holiday ship based in Falmouth then Portsmouth. At Portsmouth, she was tied up in the harbour, just off Gosport until 1986. She was then taken to Hartlepool and restored. She was renamed HMS Trincomalee in 1992 and is Europes oldest warship afloat.

wonderful to see the "country-built" ship so splendidly restored, as a sprog we used to sail past her in Portsmouth harbour regularly; a fine ship, you expect the ghost of Jack Aubrey to appear at any moment.

Couldn't have put it better myself Tim , as a very keen Fan of" Jack Aubrey and Dr Maturin and his antics portrayed by Patrick O 'Brian , but a very interesting Stepped or should it be " Shouldered " mast configuration shown here dont you think .

Hartlepool’s Royal Navy Museum undergoes massive multi-million pound expansion

The Royal Navy’s museum in Hartlepool is to undergo a multi-million-pound revamp and expansion.
Large new galleries and workshops will be created to better tell the long, proud history of the Senior Service – including providing a permanent home for a WW2 Coastal Forces boat.

The expansion will also allow the National Museum of the Royal Navy to air some of their treasures currently in storage or held in its core collection in Portsmouth.

The museum has bought the neighbouring retail park – which gives it access to empty properties ripe for conversion into new galleries, conservation workshops, reception and retail space, as well as 250 parking spaces for visitors – for £3.4m.

The expansion – part of a £20m investment in the town’s regeneration, including its historic waterfront – will put a roof over the head of RML 497, a motor launch which performed rescue duties extensively in the Channel and around the Orkneys in World War 2.

Alongside other historical galleries, the revamped retail park facilities will be converted into a reception, ticket office, shop, offices, and conservation workshops. In addition, there will be educational facilities – not just focusing on history, but also encouraging young people to tackle STEM subjects.

The investment in the Hartlepool site, which has come under the national museum’s umbrella since 2016, extends to refurbishing the existing museum building and generally improving the grounds as befits a national visitor attraction.

Thats great news and the old retail premises that they will expand into is quite some size. Pleased that they will be using some of the things that are currently in storage - too many museums have a wealth of articles that will never see the light of day again.
Looking forward to my next visit.
