France deploys MAMBA anti-missile system to Romania

The deployment of the French state-of-the-art MAMBA weapons system and an air defence command post to Romania is designed to “augment NATO’s Integrated Air and Missile Defence” said the Alliance.

The MAMBA surface-based air and missile defence system is operated by the French Air and Space Force as a theatre antimissile system to protect tactical sites against airborne threats, including cruise missiles, tactical ballistic missiles, manned and unmanned aircraft. The system’s main components are the Aster 30 interceptor missile and the Arabel multi-function radar. MAMBA can operate in an electronic warfare environment and is interoperable with other NATO air defence systems.

“In a collective effort, several Allies are providing both fighter aircraft and missile systems for an increased defensive posture on the eastern flank following Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine. With the deployment of a surface-to-air missile defence system to Romania, France has further increased its forward footprint in support of NATO’s enhanced vigilance towards potential threat from the East.”

Besides the French deployment to Romania, Germany and the Netherlands have deployed PATRIOT batteries to Slovakia and the United States sent two PATRIOT batteries to Poland in April 2022.

“The French MAMBA deployment shows France’s capacity and will to protect her own interests as well as those of her Allies,” said Colonel Pascal Ianni, French Chief of Defence Staff spokesperson.

“It permits to reinforce the strategic partnership that has united France and Romania since 2007, especially in the field of air defence. The MAMBA deployment is firmly embedded in the multinational Forward Presence Battle Group which France, supported by the Netherlands and Belgium, established in Romania under NATO’s aegis.”

Czech Republic sending attack helicopters to Ukraine

The defenders of Ukraine are set to receive a cache of powerful new weapons, including attack helicopters from the Czech Republic.

The new round of military assistance was announced on 23 May by two of the United States’ top defence officials: Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and General Mark Milley, the USA’s senior-most uniformed officer.

Earlier in the day, the two men hosted a virtual meeting of their peers to discuss continued assistance to Ukraine. Defence chiefs from 47 countries were in attendance at the second meeting of the coalition, which has been dubbed the Ukraine contact group.

Austin thanked several European countries for arms donations pledged to Ukraine during the meeting, including the UK, Poland, Norway and Greece. But he singled out two others for particular praise.

“I’m especially grateful to Denmark, which announced today that it will provide a harpoon launcher and missiles to help Ukraine defend its coast,” says Austin. “I’d also like to thank the Czech Republic for its substantial support, including a recent donation of attack helicopters, tanks and rocket systems.”

It was not immediately clear which aircraft, or how many, the Czechs are sending to Ukraine. According to the FlightGlobal 2022 World Air Forces directory, the Czech air force operates a mix of Soviet-era and western attack helicopters, including the Bell AH-1Z Viper and the Mil Mi-24 Hind.

The country lists 15 Mi-24s and 19 Mi-17 Hip utility lift helicopters in its active inventory. Four AH-1Zs and eight Bell UH-1Y Venom (more commonly known as the Super Huey) are listed as being on-order.

Throughout the now three-month Russian invasion of Ukraine, Western leaders organizing aid to the Ukrainian armed forces have shown a preference for sending Soviet Bloc equipment, such as MiG fighter jets and S-300 air defence systems. The bulk of equipment operated by Ukrainian troops is Soviet in origin and thus requires little-to-no training time upon its receipt.

In contrast, it may require substantial training on Western jets and helicopters before Ukrainian operators can make effective use of them. That makes Prague’s Mi-24s the likely candidate for the attack helicopters heading to Ukraine.

Some Eastern European countries, including Poland, have proposed sending their stocks of Soviet-era aircraft, tanks and missiles to Ukraine, in return for those systems being replaced by modern American-made equivalents.

The USA itself has provide Ukraine with some $4 billion worth of equipment from its own stocks, including Mi-17s previously destined for the now-defunct Afghan air force.

The international effort to supply Ukraine’s armed forces with materiel appears to gaining momentum as those forces see increasing success on the battlefield.

“The momentum of donations and deliveries has been outstanding”, Austin notes. “After today’s discussions I’m pleased to report that we’re intensifying our efforts, and moving forward, we’ll continue to deepen our coordination and cooperation so that Ukraine can sustain and strengthen its battlefield operations.”

General Milley notes that the number of American troops in and around Europe now tops 100,000 – a 30% increase compared to levels seen before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Ukraine contact group plans to meet again in June.

Poland has announced buying 6 (3 batteries of 2) Patriot systems from USofA.
Another one has been already ordered.
All are due to come in autumn this year.
The medium range AA missiles is also planned to be built in PL.
The short range manpad AA is now deployed (though I do not know in sufficient numbers) and the missiles donated to UKR being said to be pretty effective.
With a/m latest improvements to the PL AA umbrella are said to be good enough .

The breaking news from the naval field is a proposal (by UK) of building "coalition of willing" which would escort merchants to Ukraine ports in order to pick up 20millions ton of grain to feed poorer countries.
As for land transportation it is estimated the PL alone may facilitate some 2 million ton by trains and roads; might be after some great effort might be twice of this but it is still not just small percentage of needs of N Africa in particular.

Comments and more detailed info welcomed.

Exclusive: Russia's Air War in Ukraine is a Total Failure, New Data Show

US Defence Intelligence agency assess that less than 40% of Russian missiles fired during the war in Ukraine have hit their intended targets.
20-30% fail to launch or crash in flight and many miss aiming points.

I have been waiting for the assessment of the RUS missiles accuracy/reliability and I am glad my suspicions that both of them significantly failed have been confirmed.
To be frank after the First Gulf War the percentage of different US "smart weapons" accuracy was also lower than expected.
Partially in those times the guiding systems very venerable to smoke and dust.

It is common thinking here the Russian electronics and all the hardware based on chips/computers can not be good.
The true is that we have as opponent a country which in contemporary times have not created any world wide brand mark even for such simple thing like fridge or vacuum cleaner or more complicated stuff like a/c engines (which are fuel thirsty), etc, etc.
They have been living for many years sort of underdevelopment country economics life on selling their energy resources.
Anyway, history of wars clearly shows that numbers is important factor.
And Russia has advantage, alas.

Seems like some of the Russian planners in their navy apparently have enough common sense not to carry out an amphibious operation in Odessa area.
This would require destroy the town and adjacent areas (famous for and loved by many Russians) to suppress the defense and still attackers would suffer a lot.
Combat experience, clever planning and highest level of coordination of services in the so complicated amphibious operation is of utmost importance and would be out of reach for the Russian military.
There must be many other factors that effect their decision of not launching a costal attack on this area of course.

Russian Naval Blockade of Ukraine Called Attack on Global Food Supply

As the Russian invasion of Ukraine grinds to a bloody stalemate, the Russian navy is effectively blockading the northern Black Sea, cutting off maritime trade at Ukrainian ports, in what world leaders call a deliberate attack on the global food supply chain.

Foreign Policy is reporting that Western governments are scrambling to find ways to break the blockade and ease the strains on the global commodities and agricultural markets rocked by the war. Ukraine, referred to as the “breadbasket of Europe,” feeds some 400 million people around the world and is a top grain supplier to dozens of developing countries, including politically unstable Middle Eastern and African countries that have seen food prices skyrocket since Russia first launched its invasion of Ukraine in late February.

The clock is now ticking, as the first harvest of the season arrives in the next two months. A continued Russian blockade would prevent much of the tens of millions of tons of grain currently trapped at Ukraine’s ports from ever leaving.

“We need to get the ports open, operational. Otherwise, we are going to have catastrophe on top of catastrophe,” warned David Beasley, head of the U.N. World Food Program (WFP), this month. “It’s hard to believe how devastating this is really going to be on the poorest of the poor around the world.”

Secretary of State Antony Blinken echoed the grim assessment last week in remarks at the United Nations, calling Russia’s blockade “a deliberate effort” to destabilize the world’s food supply.

“The food supply for millions of Ukrainians — and millions more around the world — has quite literally been held hostage by the Russian military,” he said.
