Phasing changes will see work on Ganges mast and parade ground in Shotley brought forward

Work is set to start on the long-awaited development at the former HMS Ganges training site, after a re-phasing amendment was approved by planners.

Developers now aim to bring forward the renovation of the iconic HMS Ganges mast, Nelson Hall and the parade ground as part of the first phase to build new homes on the site, instead of waiting until 113 houses were built, as originally agreed.

Haylink, along with partners Galliard Homes and Wavensmere, have been given the go ahead by Babergh to start the first phase, with work due to start building the new houses in January.

The non-material amendment was approved, which will also allow heritage buildings and community and /commercial uses are delivered in the earlier phases of the development.

The amendment to the proposed strategic layout to phase one will enable a better defined entrance to the site and wider, tree-lined internal road to be delivered, along with localised and minor re-sizing and re-positioning of dwellings.

Clearance work has stepped up and construction plant and equipment is due to arrive on the site in Shotley Gate over the next few weeks.

Controversial plans to demolish Ganges swimming pool building in Shotley are withdrawn

The controversial plans to demolish the swimming pool building at the former HMS Ganges development site have been withdrawn.

Historic England aired 'serious concerns' regarding the application on heritage grounds and the potential harm it could cause to the conservation area in Shotley Gate.

Applicants Haylink decided to withdraw the application to demolish the building and instead will consider how to make best use of the structure, although it is widely acknowledged it will never be returned as a swimming pool.

A standing agreement means the parish council would benefit by £40,000 to be used for community facilities after previously agreeing the pool would not be viable to be either refurbished or rebuilt.

Hello All, I posted on here in September about scattering ashes. Today I had the honour of scattering the ashes of nine former Ganges Ships Company into the River Orwell. RIP George Rowe, George Athroll, Ronald Henry Edwards, Robert Charles Allen, Lt David Sully MBE, Michael John Winter (Fred), Peter Anthony Talman, John Leslie Morris (Jack), William Finbar Stewart. With the families permission it was filmed. The feeling from this group was you would like to see it. The ceremony is organised every year by the Ganges Association. Fair Winds and Calm Seas Shipmates, your duties are done

luke macaulay:
Delighted to be asked to come along and film on behalf of all involved it was a privilege. A very moving service and the ashes being given to the sea is a beautiful tribute.

New partnership revealed to deliver Ganges site in Shotley Gate

A new partnership has been forged to deliver the development site at the former HMS Ganges site, with work due to start in earnest in the new year.

Wavensmere Homes have teamed up with Galliard Homes to build 385 homes, retails units, on the 60-acre development, which they plan to call Barrelman's Point.

There will also be 9,359 square metres of new and converted commercial and leisure premises in a new commercial centre which will include a grocer, retail space, a gymnasium and children’s play areas.

The joint venture will also work with Clague Architects, to preserve and restore several designated Royal Navy heritage assets including the Grade II listed ceremonial mast, Grade II listed entrance gates, a mid-19th century fort and two Martello towers.

Work is due to start on the first phase of the Ganges site in the first quarter of next year with an estimated four to five year phased build programme.

Wavensmere and Galliard are planning to bring forward the restoration of the mast, the parade ground area and Nelson Hall, which they aim to use as a show room.

James Dickens, managing director at Wavensmere Homes, said: “Wavensmere Homes has a proven track record in restoring historic buildings to their former glory, a skill-set which will add significant value to Barrelman’s Point and one of the reasons we have joined the partnership.
