Britain reaffirms Asia 'tilt' as new warship makes Singapore stop

SINGAPORE, Oct 11 (Reuters) - Britain's new aircraft carrier the HMS Queen Elizabeth made a stop in Singapore on Monday, part of a move to reassert itself globally and boost its military presence in Asia amid rising competition among major powers.

The Queen Elizabeth led a British carrier strike group in exercises with Singapore's military at the weekend, including naval manoeuvres and simulated combat training with F-35B stealth fighters and F-16 jets.

Britain plans to permanently deploy two warships in Asian waters, where the United States and Western allies are trying to contain China's militarisation and island-building in seas vital to the movement of trillions of dollars of global trade.

"Our recent integrated review highlighted the importance of the Indo Pacific and the UK's intent to tilt here and have an increased footprint, and much more persistent presence," strike group commander, Commodore Steve Moorhouse, told Reuters aboard the new 65,000-tonne vessel.

"What better way to just show that off in the first instance, with Queen Elizabeth deploying here for her first operational deployment."

By Sir Humphrey:

A Global Navy for A Global Britain - CSG21 in the Pacific

The Royal Navy has continued to demonstrate its impressive global reach and presence in the Pacific Ocean. The Carrier Strike Group deployment has been operating across the region, with ships calling in various ports, and jointly operating with friends and allies in a range of exercises.

Perhaps the defining point of the deployment thus far has been the stunning images released showing HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH steaming alongside a pair of US carriers, and a Japanese helicopter carrier, along with escorts and support ships. This image of a coalition of willing allies working together at sea sends a powerful signal to a variety of nations.

For the Royal Navy the CSG21 deployment has marked a welcome return to operating strike carriers globally for the first time in many years. It has been an extremely useful deployment that has helped not only visibly demonstrate the renewed British interest in the Indo-Pacific, but also begin to rekindle defence links that had become somewhat atrophied in previous years.

Royal Navy Wildcat fires the first operational Martlet missile

On 16th October, a Wildcat helicopter conducted the first operational firing of the Marlet missile. The aircraft, 219 flight from 815 Naval Air Squadron and based on HMS Defender launched the missile, successfully hitting the target while flying in the Bay of Bengal.

This is a significant step in the introduction of the Martlet Lightweight Multi-Role Missile (LMM) into service and adds another important layer of defence to the Carrier Strike Group. Martlet is primarily intended to provide defence against asymmetric threats such as small boat swarms. Initial airborne test firings were made in April 2020 but this is the first time the missile has been fired by an operational aircraft and in a theatre outside the UK. Another 815 NAS Wildcat based on HMS Richmond supported the serial as ‘chase aircraft’, recording the launch. HMS Defender is currently part of the CSG21 deployment and the in early October the group passed through the Malacca Strait and into the Bay of Bengal, ahead of joining the Maritime Partnership Exercise (MPX21) which included the US, Australian and Japanese navies.
