Incredible timing. This picture was taken from USS Essex, looking towards USS Enterprise as a Japanese bomb blew her forward elevator sky high,May 1945 off Okinawa. This ended her combat career. She missed the surrender ceremonies in September, but was repaired for Navy celebrations in NYC in October 1945.
