Japan eyes F-35 deployment in south for Senkaku defense

TOKYO -- Japan is giving strong consideration to positioning new F-35B stealth fighter jets on the southern island of Kyushu, Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi indicated Tuesday, a move that would beef up deterrence against China's increasingly frequent maritime forays in the East China Sea.

The Air Self-Defense Force's Nyutabaru Air Base in Miyazaki Prefecture in southern Kyushu "is certainly a leading candidate," Kishi told reporters. Tokyo aims to bring the planes into service in 2024.

Deploying the advanced fighters on Kyushu would put them near the Senkaku Islands to Japan's southwest, which are administered by Tokyo but claimed by Beijing. Recent months have seen a sharp rise in official Chinese vessels sailing near the islands, and recent legislation positioning China's coast guard as a quasi-military force has set off alarm bells in Tokyo.

IZUMO showing her new deck paint, presumably with a HIGH TEMP coating for the F-35B? Current information is that her bow won't be modified until her next scheduled refit after which she should be capable of operating the F-35B. No rush tho..... :( DFO

Recent photo of KUMANO fitting out, note that the "light weight" 5" has been installed. Certainly brilliant that the U$N considers a 57 mm popgun adequate for a FFG........... DFO

Japan is converting its 2 biggest warships into aircraft carriers, and US Marines are helping it train to use them

As China increases the size and capability of its military, Japan has responded by adapting its Self-Defense Force to meet what it sees as a growing threat.

Japan has created its first amphibious military unit since World War II and launched a new class of high-tech frigates, and it's restructuring its tank force to be lighter and more mobile and building up its missile capabilities.

Perhaps the most eye-opening move, though, is the conversion of its two Izumo-class helicopter carriers into dedicated aircraft carriers.

On Sunday, two US Marine Corps F-35Bs landed on and took off from the deck of the Izumo, the lead ship of the class — the first time a fixed-wing aircraft has operated from a Japanese carrier in 75 years.

Japanese destroyer escorts Australian vessel for 1st time

SDF expands asset protection mission under 2015 security law to include Canberra

A Maritime Self-Defense Force ship escorted an Australian vessel during this week's bilateral naval drill, Japan's Defense Ministry said Friday, marking the first time Japanese forces protected warships other than U.S. vessels.

The escort took place during a joint exercise conducted Wednesday through Friday south of Shikoku, one of Japan's four main islands. The Japanese destroyer Inazuma protected the frigate Warramunga in response to a request from the Australian side.

Tokyo looks to deepen security cooperation with Canberra as China enhances its military. Last year, Japan's Self-Defense Forces were involved in a record 25 missions protecting U.S. military vessels and aircraft.
