Aircraft Carriers: Graf Zepplin

Unread post by designeraccd »

The ill fated-never finished-GRAF ZEPPLIN was shuttled around some and had an "Atlantic" style bow added, but finally was captured, post war, by the Sovs. Some modified JU-87s and ME-109s were built for her, but of course never operated from the incomplete CV.

She was scuttled by the Germans near War's end. DFO

Despite looking nearly finished, she never went anyplace under her own power. Tugs were always used to move her around to various ports in the Baltic. She, like the SEYDLITZ, became a waste of resources and manpower. Of course, far Herman deserves some of the "credit"....

Even had she been completed with aircraft, what could one untried CV have done versus the Royal Navy??? Get sunk.......... DFO

One of the 15cm gun turrets intended for Aircraft Carrier Graf Zeppelin. The guns were used to defend Bismarck Class Battleship Tirpitz as coastal artillery at Alta fjord, after it was clear the Graf Zeppelin would not be completed. It is currently located at Oscarsborg Fortress at Oslo fjord, Norway.
