FYI: Gary Staff wrote a SUPERB book about the WW1 German battle cruisers, including the units not completed such as the MACKENSEN. Also, possible larger designs that were looked at. IMO, probably the single best book I have about a ship type. It is full of excellent pictures and nuggets of facts I had never seen before! :D DFO

No doubt the east coast of England did NOT car for their "visits" in WW1 !!! Given the risk to their valuable battle cruisers, I am surprised the Germans did those raids. Despite all of the planning to LURE parts of the Grand Fleet out, the only full scale fleet action, Jutland, was somewhat accidental!

Two photos of DERFFLINGER: early and end. She was still inverted when finally scrapped. DFO

Not so big now eh Dennis .......

I often wonder just what percentage of these vessels is melted down , and what percentage is " misplaced" shall we say.... as you rarely if ever actually see the accounts for the breaking up of ships , or am I just being an old cynic

IIRC, cutting up of DERFFLINGER was not completed until after WW2. Rather sad to see a once proud, mighty warship being reduced to a pile of junk.... :(

Not a battle cruiser, but the once mighty TIRPITZ, thru her short "life". DFO
